Pelpêç — A Taste of Kurdish Tradition

Pelpêç is more than a traditional Kurdish dish; it is a celebration of family, togetherness and the traditions passed down through generations. It is a dish that brings people together, with family members gathering around the pot to prepare each leaf by hand, filling and wrapping it with care.

This painting captures that precious moment before the leaves are wrapped and the pot is filled, the delicate leaves, the rice and ingredients, and the hands that bring everything together. It honours the beauty of the process, the quiet gestures of love and the shared memories created around food.

Even the name, Pelpêç, carries a piece of Kurdish identity, reflecting the act of wrapping leaves. Through this work, I wanted to preserve not only the image of a beloved dish, but the feeling of home, the warmth of family and the cultural heritage held within these everyday rituals.
