Jumping over the fire
On Newroz, Kurdish people light fires and jump across them as part of welcoming the new year and the beginning of spring. The fire represents the end of the dark winter and the return of light, warmth and new life. Jumping across fire is also connected to older traditions of leaving sickness and bad fortune behind and entering the new year with health and strength. For Kurds, the Newroz fire also has a strong meaning of freedom. Through the story of Kawa the Blacksmith and his uprising against Dehak, fire became a symbol of liberation from oppression. So crossing the fire brings these meanings together: leaving the old year behind, renewal, strength and stepping into a new beginning.
